The Lararium
The Lararium

The Lararium was a shrine to the guardian spirits of the Roman household. Family members performed daily rituals at this shrine to guarantee the protection of these domestic spirits, the most significant of which were the Lares.

Our Lararium imitates the form of a temple. Columns support a pediment, and frame a central painting. Two dancing lares (guardians of the family, who protect the household from external threats) hold raised drinking horns. They are positioned on either side of the genius (who represents the spirit of the male head of the household), who is dressed in a toga and making a sacrifice.

Beneath them all is a serpent. Snakes are often depicted in lararia, and were considered guardian spirits of the family.

White Ware Face Pot
Roman Civilians

White Ware Face Pot produced from mid 1st Century through to the mid 2nd Century AD before gradually tailing off at the end of the 2nd Century AD.

The officers of the Roman army were permitted to marry and it was common for their families to settle in and around the permanent bases. Our civilian section of the camp allows visitors to explore the softer side of life in Britannia and learn about the culture and way of life the soldiers were fighting to protect and promote. From our noble ladies and their make-up table, to gruesome medical tools, this is place to see many of our most intriguing objects.
