Irregular Scout
Irregular Scout

Here we see CVON, a native Celtic warrior from a Numerus Exploratorum, -- Nvmervs Exploratorvm --, raised from the local Dumnonii tribe and employed by the Romans as an irregular scout.

These irregular troops would wear their native tunics, trousers and boots and were generally bareheaded. They used their own native weapons, carrying shields, spears or javelins and a knife or sword.

Numeri were used in addition to the regular auxiliary alae and cohorts for frontier duty or to explore and secure areas beyond the frontiers,

From the late first century the so-called Numeri appeared, they were raised from the more barbarous peoples on the frontiers, by Trajan and regularised by Hadrian, they ranked below the auxila. They normally consisted of 100-200 strong reconnaissance or guard units, stationed along fixed lengths of the frontiers. They were under the command of a Praepositus Numeri, often a Centurian seconded from a legion. The name exploratorum means “scout”.

Numeri were used in addition to the regular auxiliary alae and cohorts on the frontiers or to explore and secure areas beyond the frontiers, particularly in more remote forest regions.

Auxiliary soldiers were recruited from right across the conquered nations of the Imperium, selected for demonstrating skills in battle which could supplement those of the legionary heavy infantry. The auxiliary soldiers of The Antonine Guard are drawn from two units which helped garrison the northern frontier. The first is Cohors Sexta Nerviorum, the Sixth Cohort of Nervians. These celtic warriors were recruited in the region of modern Belgium and fight with oval shields and thrusting spears. They provide light infantry support for the legionaries. The second is the Cohors Prima Hamiorum, the First Hamians. These eastern archers were recruited in distant Syria but were destined to garrison Rome’s northernmost frontier.
